Remove the floor plate in the cab. Below it you will see a short drive shaft between the torque converter and the transmission. Does it.? NigeAug 31, So that would appear to rule out a slipping transmission clutch and suggest that the problem might lie in the converter. NigeSep 1, Joined: Sep 19, Messages: 1, Location: Ontario.

Go through everything you describe in first post, watch the drive shaft between converter and transmission and tell us what happens. Later Bob. Just reading your first post again. The oil goes from the outside of the filters to the inside, so a blocked filter will collapse inwards if the bypass spool is stuck or if it has the wrong spring in it for the filter Part Number you are using.

Did you replace the filters with new ones.?

1985 CAT D8L - Simmons Tractor Limited

Did you try cutting the old filters open to see what type of material was inside them.? Try checking the filter bypass valve to ensure that at least the spool moves smoothly. I would use the 1R if it was my tractor but before starting the engine for the first time with new filters installed I would be looking at the bypass valve in both filter housings.

I would also remove the screen at the bottom of the torque converter housing and check it for any material that might be blocking it. See below circled in red. NigeSep 2, With a clogged screen like that I think you have a transmission repair in the near future. You've come to the right place.

Thanks for joining us and I hope you enjoy your stay!! Welcome to HeavyEquipmentForums. I bought it at an auction with some other spare parts before another D8L went up for sale I ended up not getting that one.

I'll look in the book, but I take it that I'll have to drain the radiator to change out the pump?

cat d8l transmission trouble

I also bought a new sender unit for the torque converter as well as gauge and built three pressure test jigs psipsipsi and got more testing nipples. I'll keep you all updated!! Joined: Jun 22, Messages: 14, Location: G. Seeing as you have already purchased a replacement TC temp sender unit it might pay you to install it first and do a few tests to see if it makes any difference to the TC Out temp readings on the gauge before going after the water pump. It won't cost you anything.

Before removing the water pump I would drain the coolant first and then flush the system out with plenty of clean water until the drain is running really clean. Anything that meets Cat EC-1 specification would work. NigeSep 6, Joined: May 30, Messages: Location: Arkansas. Heard a mechanic talk about the elc coolant today and using it in older machines.

Said some with a lot of corrosion it would cause them to leak because the elc would dissolve the corrosion and allow it to leak in weak spots.

Is this true? OldcatpusherSep 7, If the lights coming on and flickering before the gauge hits that is a problem with the temp switch for the trans light which is not the same as the gauge sender.

The early d8n crawlers would run over all the time due to an undersized cooler. I think you have more of an electrical problem. Have a look at 7n converter temp swtch. Last edited: Sep 7, MobiltechSep 7, Caterpillar is a major manufacturer of farm and building equipment, mining equipment, engines and a variety of other machines.

Because there are many different types of Caterpillar vehicles, there are also many different types of transmissions in its product line. For specifics on your Caterpillar transmission, you should consult your Operations and Maintenance manual or a trained professional, but some general tips can help you to better understand how to troubleshoot most Caterpillar systems.

Remember, too, that the best way to avoid a need for troubleshooting is to keep your machine maintained as described in your manual. Get an S. This is a test done on the transmission oil by experts at your Caterpillar dealership. It is useful not only when you have a problem with your machine, but also as a regular check up intended to catch issues early before they become major problems. This analysis can reveal many things about the transmission, such as the rate of wear on all components, if the oil is contaminated by dirt or liquids leaking into it, and if the correct oil is being used.

Use the right oil. This oil is formulated to keep transmission slippage to a minimum and improve the performance and lifespan of drive train components, along with providing other benefits as well.

Check your breathers regularly. If you're having a problem with your clutch engaging too quickly and then sliding, it may be because the breathers are clogged. When this occurs, foreign contaminants such as dirt can enter the cab more easily. These contaminants can then damage the electronics that control your clutch. To check your breathers, follow the instructions for locating them in your manual and look for signs of build-up, oil or other clogs.

Check your filters. Transmission filters are used in your Caterpillar to keep it clean and contaminant-free. These are important because contamination from the outside in the form of dirt, metal, grease, or other particles can lead to multiple transmission problems such as shifting issues, leaks, and unnecessary wear on the clutch, bearing, or gears. Follow the instructions in the user manual to identify where your filters are and then look for signs of buildup. You can reduce contamination by keeping the space around your Caterpillar clean, but can never eliminate it.

If you machine is especially susceptible to contamination you may consider switching to High Efficiency Filters.
